The Fixtures and Fittings!

  • It isn't that uncommon to take light fittings and curtains.

Unless you really like them, or are a bargain, then you can always refuse. Sometimes you find that they get left anyway.

It just seems so incredibly petty that for a house worth over £500k someone would want to charge you an extra £200 for some curtains! Wouldn't even cross my mind to do that!!  I guess I can't stop them removing the light fittings, just hope they leave the ceilings in a decent state. At the place I sold last year, I left mirrors, shelves, a desk, a spare ladder, etc. People are funny.

It's weird as they're leaving the mirrors but wanted to take the lights and made to measure curtains/blind. I wonder if I'd said no thanks whether they would have left them anyway.

I still think that for good quality light fittings (there are three in total in our case, one in the lounge area and two over the dining table area), the money is covering not only the fixtures but also the cost and inconvenience of having to source new ones and presumably an electrician to wire them up? I don't know about the last part, but I've always just used lampshades over plain old bulbs so I'm not sure how confident I'd be at DIYing lights.

Maybe your buyers hated those mirrors, shelves and desk and were annoyed at having to get rid of them when you left them? People are indeed funny...

Unless you agree they must leave a light, usually a simple ceiling rose with pendant in the room when they take down fittings. Do not pay a lot for fittings as they are worth little secondhand.
