Home Sound - Surround Sound - Subwoofer

Options
Looking to get home surround sound for my living room... probably 2.1 (one on either side of the sofa, and then a subwoofer).

Does anyone have any recommendations they use? Not looking to break the bank particularly... Something very powerful yet money friendly :)

Many thanks,

I would probably just spend my money on 2 high quality floor standing speakers.

I wouldn't . . . well not all of it because a powerful 'sub' makes all the difference.
I use a Mackie 500W subwoofer in my music room and can really feel that 'thump' in the chest, but its really a part of a full-on PA system rather than something for a living room and watching TV.
There are usually loads of 'top 10 ' reviews online so I'd start there.  Or look at 2.1 systems from a known brand like Bose or Harmon Kardon.
Much as I'm a big fan of online shopping, speaker systems are one of the few things where listening in a shop (in a 'proper' shop) can be really helpful.  Try Richer Sounds maybe, if they're open at the moment?  Or just buy something online that has good reviews and be prepared to send it back if you don't like it.  Some hassle involved but one of the advantages of online shopping.
But bare in mind that it won't sound the same at home as it does in the shop, so you still may have to do a bit of back and forth.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

    Many thanks,
Anyway back to reality....Money friendly? What is you budget?
2.1 will not give you surround sound, so, what is it exactly you are after?

i want high standing speakers 2.1 or greater around the sofa to create the surround sound effect in the living room - thats all. However, I want a crisp sound effect.
probably budget £200 give or take

As others have said unless your going for a 5.1 surround system (and a surround amp is £400+ without the speakers) its probably better to get a sound bar.
  • When you say surround sound, you mean stereo.
you don’t need a sub, you need floor-standing full range speakers
second hand Mission M74i or M73i’s are within your budget

i assume you already have an amp to drive them?
