British Gas Homecare cover V New boiler

My boiler cover is due for renewal in the next few days and is due to go up from £37 to £44 per month , on our 10 year old Ravenheat boiler that has been listed as virtually having obsolete parts per last Years service.

I have had an online quote from British Gas for a new boiler with the cost approx. £2645 or £88 per month using their 30 month interest free option.

My question is if I carried on with my boiler cover at £44 per month and decided to go ahead with a new boiler in the next month or two , would  I still be liable for the yearly cost of the cover ?

Have tried looking on the British Gas website but cannot find any info or even to contact them to ask.

Thanks

Who listed the Ravenheat parts as obsolete?
Paying £528 every year for boiler cover just doesn't make sense IMHO, far better to bung it into a savings account and raid it as necessary.
  • Hi,
seems you get 5 year warranty with BG boiler.
So, forget about the boiler cover and put the £44 saved towards the £88 new boiler cost, half price boiler.

You'll get at least 5 years warranty with any new boiler now, often 7 or even 10.
If BG have quoted you £2,645, they're typically 40% more than a local independent RGI, so more like £1,600 to £1,750, if it's a straight swap and not a conventional to combi conversion, or any additional work to the plumbing side.
Having said that, BG have major history for declaring boilers obsolete and parts unobtainable, when in reality they are readily available. You are aware that their service engineers get a bung for supplying sales leads, so their opinion is never unbiased on this?

Thanks for the replies. I won't aware that the service engineers were rewarded for sales leads . We have been in our house for over 7years and took out the boiler cover when it packed up ie £99 call out fee and then around £25 Homecare for the year.
For the past 4 years we have been told that the parts are virtually obsolete so have been braced for getting a new boiler. I just assumed they'd force me into getting a new boiler by hiking up the cover price.
Really interesting to read your comments
    Thanks

At the current rate, you've spent well over £3,000 on cover over 7 years, which would have almost bought you a new boiler twice over. Other than servicing, how many call-outs have you actually needed in that time?

Agree with all the above, save your money for when you need that boiler replaced. Meanwhile get yourself a trusted gas engineer (local) and get them to service the boiler, you'll probably get a true estimate of how obsolete your boiler parts are and a better price quote should it need replacing.

    Yes, agree with others.
I do have British gas cover on a rental property, just as its easier with the electrics cover etc. Getting a cheap person in London can be a complete hassle, there are some cowboys about.
I would echo get a local well reviewed plumber to check your boiler and see if parts are available or it needs replacing.
If you find it needs replacing I would either go with a local engineer or try "boxt". I have used both of these. I was impressed with the bixt service and it was a great price. I used British gas about 20 yrs ago and the boiler was fitted well but the cleanliness and finishing touches were poor and they massively overcharge so would avoid again. (Saying that, that vaillant boiler is still going strong)
