Refund of interest on closed Mortgage account - Bank requires deedpole name change as evidence

Hi all, I've received a letter from a bank I had a mortgage with many years back, they charged me interest for the day my account was closed so I am getting a grand total of £16 back. The problem is the mortgage was in my maiden name, I changed my middle name by deedpole around the time I got married, along the way when I was changing my name with banks etc. someone forgot to send back the original copy of deedpole, I only have photo copies BUT the bank want a certified copy.
What I want to know is can they insist on this? Obviously I can get a solicitor to do this but that's going to cost more than I am owed. Last year I sent copies of deedpole change out when claiming PPI and no-one asked for a certified copy, it's frustrating that the bank may get to keep my money.
Can anyone advise me on this? thanks

Yes they can. Indeed they have a duty to do so.

However, firms sometimes do. Or if it was during the early stages of the CV, a lot of requirements were suspended.
