PRE PAID FUNERAL AND GIFT INFORMATION

Options
My Uncle has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness and being the organised gentleman that he is he wants to pre pay for his funeral. The Lasting Power of Attorney has been finalised and I am trying to find out if this is something that I can do on his behalf in order to fulfill his wishes.
One more thing I need advise on aswell. He lost his wife in February last year and he was planning to take us on a family holiday which unfortunately he will not be well enough to go on now. He keeps saying that he wants to give us the money so that we can still go as he appreciates everything that was done for my Aunty when she was ill and now he also wants to say thank you for  the care that he is receiving. I don't think this is something that would be allowed but wanted to double check before I explain the legalities to him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated at this difficult time.
Thank you

Yes, you can certainly do a pre-paid funeral for him, and as he still has his mental faculties then you can also make the gifts as he is directly instructing you to do so. If you are not his executor you need to document those gifts and pass that to his executors.

Check the terms and conditions carefully, particularly as he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. This is worth reading: https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/funeral-plans
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Under the circumstances it might be best to select a funeral director your uncle would be happy with and approach them directly to discuss the details of the funeral and to buy it direct from them using whatever prepay scheme they recommend. This will give you or your uncle the chance to make wishes with regard to aspects of the funeral known too,  assuming your uncle is up to doing that.
You don’t mention a Will but I assume your uncle has one given he has had the foresight to do the LPA. If not it would be best to get one. If he has one he might want to revisit it and could also make the gift of money for a holiday through that.
