Trying and failing to factory reset my old laptop. I get the following options, neither of which are any use. Also if I try the F8 option on start up i select “repair computer” but it just freezes on a black screen and does nothing.
Any ideas what I can do?

If its a branded computer (Acer, HP, etc) on its original installation you may have a built-in recovery option. This may be a program on the Start Menu or by pressing a certain key during startup (typically F11 for HP's or ALT+F10 for Acer).

As suggested, more saleable when updated. SSD and Windows 10, as many people are advised to buy devices with SSD.
But if you are going to just sell it cheap and are unlikely to regain the £20 you spend on an SSD, you can make your choice as to how to sell it. With Windows 7, with Windows 10 or Windows 10 and SSD.
Personally, I would swap the HDD if I wanted to make sure that no one could have access to my personal data or at least zero it and clean install over it. Especially if you have already lost the Recovery partition. Check, using the instructions behind the link, to see if it is still functional.

First of all, the activation method is stored in the BIOS. So no need to write down any keys. The Gatherosstate/Genuine Ticket method obviates the need for capturing and recording product keys; but there is also another important advantage for when it comes to Royalty OEM...which I won't discuss on the open board. . The key on the COA on the underside of the laptop is not the key used for Windows 7 activation on the device.
