worth getting E.on smart meter if I'll be switching in july?

I keep getting messages to get my meter changed from E.on. This would be a smart meter, which i don't mind.
But, I'll be doing a comparison in july, and may not continue with E.on, would the new meter be compatible with other providers?
thanks

All suppliers are now fitting SMETS2 meters which are independent of suppliers. These meters connect to The Data Communications Company (a quasi Government central hub). All suppliers are registered DCC Users which means that they can access your DCC data when they become your supplier. If you change from E.oN to another supplier the new supplier becomes responsible for your meter;ie, it is required by Ofgem to resolve any issues that you might have.curlytop12 said:I keep getting messages to get my meter changed from E.on. OK, but that doesn't answer the question. Does this mean that switching to another supplier would (in general) be straightforward, or would it be better to get the new supplier to install the smart meter? I'm asking because I'm in the same boat as the OP: I'm planning to switch from EON to British Gas (apparently cheaper according to comparison sites) and can't decide whether to let EON install a smart meter or wait till BG are my supplier.[Deleted User] said:

Great that Ofgem insist the new supplier resolve any issues, but it's better that there aren't issues to resolve in the first place.0 -
Assuming E.ON fit the latest smets2 meter, then yes it will be compatible with other providers assuming they support smart meters (the 'big 6' certainly do). I had smart meters installed from E.ON in Dec 2019, then I moved to EDF last Summer and they've continued to work in full smart mode with EDF as well.curlytop12 said:I keep getting messages to get my meter changed from E.on. spoke to EON today, they won't guarantee a SMETS2, will only say they " mostly" fit this newer version.

Apparantly not , EON just said they "mostly" fir them, but won't guarantee it. They told me NO supplier will definitely fit them either.The_Groat_Counter said:[Deleted User] said:All suppliers are now fitting SMETS2 meters which are independent of suppliers. Hi curlytop12, hope you're well.curlytop12 said:spoke to EON today, they won't guarantee a SMETS2, will only say they " mostly" fit this newer version.
I've just queried this with one of our Smart Metering Compliance leads and have received the followingThe vast majority of what we install is Smets2, this is our default offering. Only by rare exception are Smets1 meters installed now.
We don’t publish the actual volumes externally on each meter type installed, this is only shared with Ofgem in our annual reporting.
This goes along with what I was thinking anyway but good to have actual confirmation. As it mentions only in very rare circumstances would we install a SMETS 1. If you wanted to, you can also check with the installer on the day.
