With reference to to car tax and mot, if the tax has expired with also the mot expired, like already mentioned you will have to move the car of the road onto a drive (providing it's not had a dangerous report issued on the car, if so you will have to arrange for the car to be transported to the house, and as for the tax declare the car off the road via a SORN, once the garage has the repair part maybe they can collect the car via a transporter and after they carry out a repair/mot test you will be able to tax the car, which you will be able to go to the garage and drive away.
If a car fail's a test and STAYS at the garage, they have 10 days to re-test the car. If you remove the car to take elsewhere for repair you have to return for retest at the SAME test station and depending what it failed on, they may charge half the mot fee as if it was springs or suspension/tyres will have to go back on the ramp for inspection.-1 -
with reference to broken coil springs, I used to work in the garage trade now retired and over the years if a spring is broken, then if it's just one you will normally see the car listing on one side or possibly hear a rattle from that side with the broken spring loose the the suspension, If both springs are broken then unless you see the car lower at the rear the only way is to feel or look with a mirror and light. Only once have I experienced a spring coming loos and moving sideways resulting in rubbing on the tyre.-1

Before anyone else replies I’m sure that in the 4 years since the original post the situation has been resolved.4
