Student loan interest is 5.6%. That is above-inflation.

The rest of us aren't allowed to travel to our second homes just because they might be nicer places to work from.Chandler85 said:I think returning to university accommodation could easily be argued as essential, whether the Scottish government like it or not. A lot of students have more space, quieter spaces that are easier to work in at university. As most households aren't set up for parents to work from home, never mind parents, older students and then any other children.0 -
They applied pre covid so expecting a normal year. They got accepted and applied for accommodation in August before the new variant when people were expecting some sort of social distancing but that education would continue on site.gettingtheresometime said:I do wonder what university students were expecting this academic year to be like

They didn't have to take an offer up. And then in August everyone was far from thinking it was going to be ok. Everyone can stay in their private rented if they want to.Scotbot said:

I advised my son not to apply to uni for this year because things were so uncertain with covid restrictiions and I didn't want to take the chance of him having to pay for a room he wasn't using, being forced to study online rather than in class. There were lots of reasons it wasn't a good idea to enter uni this year.
And I am afraid I was correct. Online resources/techniques aren't always as good as in class. I know how much my younger son's education was affected by a poor online provision in some subjects. It depends on the course and the provisions they have made (and how able the student is to study more independently than expected). I wouldn't expect any young person to start a course this year, and take the risk they were too inexperienced, not enough skills to cope with changes.0
