They're trying to scam the OP.
The value of some disposable second-hand furniture...

    Woo.

    Some scam.
How big does a scam have to be to make it wrong?

    Woo.

    Some scam.
Second hand furniture can still be worth hundreds of pounds
Or it could be worth literally next to nothing.
The OP has been asked several times what it is, how much it's worth. They've not answered. It's safe to assume it is not valuable antiques, not least because it's very unlikely the vendors would just be leaving valuable antiques.

But I've said several times that the vendor DOES unequivocally owe the OP the value of the furniture that is not being transferred.
There are two questions - one is what that value actually IS, the other is pragmatic - how much effort it's worth to chase the vendor for that amount.
Whatever their value we don't know OP's financial position
We know he's in a position to be able to afford to buy a house.

The purchase price for that house was agreed before there was a belief that the furniture would be left - so the furniture has added zero to the transaction value.
and he said he was banking on not having to purchase said furniture
So obtain free or near-free furniture through the myriad of routes in any given area. It doesn't have to be long-term, just a stop-gap.
either reason seller is at fault and should have communicated much better.
The seller seems to have communicated as soon as they have determined there is an issue.

Scam implies a deliberate attempt to defraud. OP suspects this may be the case but doesn’t know for sure. Too easy to fling the word around on only part of the picture.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
