Cheque

  • OP how much are we talking about here?
If you do try to bank it I'm pretty sure that it will not be paid as by now there is a good chance the account it was drawn on (by this I mean the bank's suspense account) will have been closed or amalgamated due to bank closures and take overs etc.
In normal times I expect that the bank would be able to find the monies but after a lot of searching.
If for example the amount is £50 or lower they may pay out immediately if you send then a copy of the cheque and a covering letter. Giving you the small amount would be a lot cheaper than looking into it in detail.

What happens when your account is declared dormant? If your account has been dormant for 15 years or more, then banks and building societies can transfer the unclaimed money in that account to an independent body called Reclaim Fund through the Dormant Account Scheme to donate to good causes.

Given that is the Op's situation. All they can do is contact the bank that issued the cheque.
OP said the account was closed though, not dormant/inactive.
I know. But with the cheque not being cashed, then the account could still be open. As until the balance is zero a account can not be closed.
If the funds were in any internal suspense account. The bank would have been chasing to get the cheque cashed. As suspense accounts are audited on a regular basis and any outstanding credits/debits are chased.
