Stripping paint off metal

  • I got the paint off metal garden furniture using wire brush drill attachments - 3 for £2.66 from ToolStation.
Does the job, but makes a hell of a mess (eye protection is a necessity) and will scuff up the surface under the paint.

The danger with shot or grit blasting - If it is cast iron, there is a very real risk that it can break under the stress of being blasted. It also leaves a pretty rough surface, although that is dependent on the media being used.
    A safer option would be a Dip'n'Strip.
You could use glass beads, leaves a smoother finish, and less chance of localised hardening of the cast iron, which could cause it to crack

I've recently used Nitromorse and can say that the current stuff is very good
I used to use it years ago and then it was revamped and next to useless. I found the current version very quick and behaved like the original with the bonus that now its a gel it doesn't drip everywhere and the stuff pealing off stays together in the gel.
I tried a few things in the years between and found them next to useless in comparison.
The fireplace needs to be as smooth as possible whether painting or finishing the traditional way.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
