1st house prepayment gas meter

Hi all, we've just moved into our 1st house on our own energy supply instead of mum and dads 😀
There is currently a British gas meter installed but it costs a fortune and we want it out but British gas are refusing to do it because of covid. Are we able to use another supplier to remove it and change to them?
Thanks x

Just ring and ask if you switched would they do it for you.
    I wouldn’t have a pre pay either.

Thanks, we wasn't sure if we could ask another supplier thats all. Hopefully they can
  • Hmmm but british gas are fitting smart meters which can be quarterly or pre pay at the flip of switch. Funny they wont exchange your meter if doing that.

They said on Thursday that because the meter has over £2 credit on they can't do it, so we ran the meter down rang back today to be told due to government guidelines they aren't able to change the meter. Its annoying as E-on are coming out this week to change our electricity one

Perhaps you spoke with someone who didn't know what they were talking about. Email customer services with your request telling them you'll take your business elsewhere if they don't.
  • I’m in the same situation as you, but with EDF. The electric is on a smart meter, but gas on prepayment, am on their expensive Prepay Gas and expensive standard electricity tariff. Was with eon but moved to EDF after I tried to get gas meter switched with eon, but failed with their credit check for an unknown reason and was told to try again In 3 months. Switched to EDF who don’t run such checks before swapping the meter over, but the supply took several week to fully register, but as of 15th January they’re trotting out the COVID excuse to not do meter work unless emergency.

@Curlysue99 Wait until E.ON have changed your electricity meter, then try that suggestion. If they still say no, then say so what are you going to do then if I make a formal complaint, if one energy company can do it, so can you.
