Retired British Gas man to install gas cooker

I bought a gas cooker and I need a gas safe registered to install it. I advertised the job and received numerous qoutes, the cheapest one was from a retired british gas installer.
I asked him if he is still able to issue gas safety installation certificate eventhough he is retired and he said yes.
Can anyone confirm if this is right please. Eventhough I am not letting my property I prefer to have certificates to make sure that all the works done in my house is safe and passed the government's current regulation.

Ask him for his Gas Safe registration number (ask to see his Gas Safe registration card) and check it here:
Gas Safe Register | The Official List of Gas Safe Registered Businesses - Gas Safe Register has replaced CORGI registration. Don't cut corners, only use a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Click on the "check an engineer" or "check a business".
Provided he is still registered, he should be okay to issue the relevant paperwork.

It really isn't a preference.mrsmsebastian said:I prefer to have certificates to make sure that all the works done in my house is safe and passed the government's current regulation.2 -
We got someone in to fit a new gas fire in my in laws house. They were gas safe registered, I checked it out. However they didnt give us the certificate despite us asking numerous times. He then disappeared so we got someone else in to check the work, he advised that whilst the first gas man was gas safe registered, he wasnt registered to do gas fires. He checked the fire and signed it off. I have always wondered if this was true and maybe relevant to this thread.
Is there different elements to gas safety sign off?0 -
Thank you. I have used the link you provided and found out he is registered to do the job.DiddyDavies said:Ask him for his Gas Safe registration number (ask to see his Gas Safe registration card) and check it here:

Yes, I’m registered for commercial laundry and catering equipment, which means I can only work on that equipment, although you do have to be aware of the regs for everything especially ventilation, pipe sizing , although it’s all academic for me, as I decided to get out after 30 years, not checked if I’m still gas safe registered, tbh I’m glad to be out of itJIL said:We got someone in to fit a new gas fire in my in laws house. , but yes, there are different elements to gas safety..1 -
He needs cookers on his card, you wouldn't get a cert from me because cooker installs don't have to be registered with gas safeI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.2 -
You have to register every year so depends on when you retired. You must have worked for someone who did this for you or you would know this.Alanp said:

Err, no, every five years I had to attend a refresher course this renewed my gas safe register, all other gas engineers had to do this every five years, the company I worked for paid for the course..0

It renewed your qualifications...not your Gas Safe Register. You also have to be registered in your own right to carry out work for yourself and not under your company number.Alanp said:Err, no, every five years I had to attend a refresher course this renewed my gas safe register, all other gas engineers had to do this every five years, the company I worked for paid for the course..That’s every year!0 -
Well I attended every 5 years as did several of the plumbers/ gas fitters I was on the course with, as they complained they lost money if they were self employed, as I said, mine only covered commercial laundry/ catering, I suppose it checked you were still competent to carry out gas work, I never did private gas work as it was a pita,0
