When you get that picture, try inputting any series of numbers or letters, if your son-in-law was prudent, he may have left a hint at the password, which will come up when you input the wrong one.2

Last one I did was using the auto repair/utilman workaround.
no need for any messing about with boot utilities or moving a drive to another machine.
