AstroS, is that a fig & apple I spy at the back, near the neighbours?
What a good idea growing one in a metal dustbin, wish I'd thought of that, give a lovely depth of soil but doesn't it bake with sun on?

I love growing fruit and veg in the front garden! Always a good talking point with people walking past, and it makes best use of the sun for us. We've got a mix of permanent planting (raspberries in that nearest bed) then space for other crops in the other 2 beds. Herbs and flowers (and tortoise food) in amongst it all. Lots of people comment on what a good use of space it is, and how they love to watch it grow and develop.
Looks amazing and very inspirational thank you 😊

That really made a big smile seeing that. You've done wonders.
I saw someone new to a fairly posh place had started a new veg bed tentatively in the front garden. Just a few purple sprouting. But I'll look as the year passes because I bet it gets bigger.
The one I mentioned earlier has really struck out now.
A lot of bungalows have a big area at the front and not much behind (lol) so we'll see.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Yes, a fig at the front, then almond in the dustbin.  It's quite a shady spot, and the bin has a thick layer of newspaper inside (wrapped around the sides) to stop it getting too hot. We had our first almonds last year! Fig is more in the sun and crops amazingly.

What a great idea! I love fresh figs and the Spanish Pan de Higo (fig cake) - which is coincidentally made with almonds too.
I was sorely tempted by a bungalow that had a fig tree right by the front door and mostly for that reason. Think I have a spot for it where the roots are in the shade and the top in the sun. I've just worked hard and couldn't face building a concrete bunker for the roots.

These days there are root bags, still need a big hole though
I've also seen mentioned old stainless steel washing machine drums, no big roots can escape, just the titchy ones

  • Much, much nicer to have a vegetable plot in your front garden than to just block pave or tarmac the whole area which makes me sad every time I see it done.

Completely agree. I get the practicalities of it but at the same time I’d love nothing more than to see some sort of garden even a lawn and a few pot plants.

I’ve got my hard landscaping going in my back ground week after next. Redoing my gardens is my project for this lockdown and I cannot wait. I’ve just got to try not to rush it and enjoy the process 😄
