Google Pay/Apple Pay/Samsung Pay

Does anyone use any of these services?

I use google pay, and i use it online mostly. I had made a payment via google pay the other day and it was near £50. It was declined. I spoke to the bank and they said it was because it was over the £45 limit. I was under the impression that was only for contactless and not online. I had a quick look on google pay and they state their is no transaction limit for online payments.

Has anyone used google pay and can confirm this?

Is this the same with apple and samsung pay?

I believe some retailers also have limits so it might have been down to that. Who was the retailer?

I can be down to the card issuer some allow digital wallets to be over the £45 limit others don’t. 

I can’t comment on Google Pay as I have an IPhone, I have used Apple Pay on most of my cards and many times it’s been over the £45 contactless limit. 

Most recently I’ve used Apple Pay at the Apple Store app on my phone and it was a lot over the £45 limit and it went straight through no problem.

The retailer was Just Eat - i dont believe it was an issue with them. They tried to place the order and kept saying it was declined by my bank and to contact the issuer. Lloyds are now blaming VISA, first it was google pay now its VISA.

Yes i believe Apple pay are quite good with their limits. You would assume google would be too

The limit depends on the retailer. For example, ASDA impose the contactless limit on ApplePay, whilst Tesco / Waitrose / Boots / even my hairdresser take payments up to the card limit. M&S allows up to card limits at their tills but have an unhelpful £45 limit on their Mobile Pay Go app.

Lloyds Banking Group appears to have a limit of £45 on mobile transactions on Google Pay. I'm not sure what "mobile transactions" means but Lloyds does appear to set some sort of limit.

On this occasion it was defo the bank. It keep giving me a 'contact issuer' message, so dont think it was the retailer. Find it very strange when your doing an normal online bank payment for a limit to be 45, its alot easier to pay via google pay rather then type your details in. Although i do understand the security concern, because i was not asked to verify anything including the last three digits, it was just literally a number of my cards on google pay that were linked to my google account and pick the one to pay for. So maybe it explains the 45 limit by lloyds. Potential fraud if anyone has access to my computer as i am always logged in google.

Yes i think you are correct, it seems this is also including for laptops.

How did you conclude that, in the OP's case, it was definitely the retailer causing the problem and not the OP's bank?

I obviously cannot tell for certain but it would be a weird bank which limits GooglePay to contactless limits. GooglePay is even safer than using a physical card with a PIN or CVV.

I have been using ApplePay since 2015, with debit and credit cards from Nationwide, Santander, Barclays, M&S, TSB, Halifax, Starling, Natwest, RBS, and even one or two non-UK banks. The only limits I ever encountered where those imposed by Retailers. E.g. John Lewis had their ApplePay limit on the contactless limit for ages, even though their Waitrose subsidiary had no discernable limit on the same cards. They did eventually upgrade their card readers to accept up to the card limit.

AFAIK, retailers need the approval of their payment services provider if they want to raise the limit above the contactless limit, so indirectly, limits might be imposed by banks.

HSBC on apple pay is definitely unlimited/pretty high (I paid my last car service bill, a biggy including new tires, with it).  Retailers do set limits, its their setting, the same approach was rejected for £35 at my local tesco express last year.  Apple definitely don't (You can buy a laptop from apple at thousands).   Google Pay & Samsung Pay I've had similar experiences when I used to use it (paying for fuel @ £80 or so etc).  Garmin Pay's bank list is so small I've never been able to test it.
