If most of their handiwork has already been addressed, the remainder may only be in places like behind kitchen units. When we removed our old, still functional kitchen in 2015, the manufacturer's quality control stamps on the rear showed the units to be almost 30 years old, so installed long before the previous occupants took up residence. We found that the previous bodger-in-Residence had painted, in letters a foot high, 'Mike loves Susie '77' on the staircase wall under the (wonky) wallpaper! Made an interesting surprise. My parents left it as a treat for any future owners to discover and papered over it.They found all sorts wrong with the wiring, etc, but under the English system it's buyer beware, so the dodgy fuse box and rotting conservatory was theirs to fix.My dad would mutter darkly about 'Mike' and his lack of DIY talent for years after we moved in.I expect someone will complain about my dad and his quirky methods one day when that house is sold!Mortgage - £274,000 to pay

I just think when you buy a property, there's always going to be stuff to do, there's always going to be surprises, pleasant or otherwise.0

That’s nothing! Our first house (repo) contained graffiti with the words “we conceived our first daughter here hope you do the same” with very graphic descriptions of how! There was also racist stuff as well.Bad_Accountant said:Davesnave said:There are usually plenty of clues to a modern-day bodger-in-residence, but sometimes they are far off in time and space. We had live wires plastered into the wall, A wall at some point had been moved and a water pump sealed into the replacement not connected into any pipes (Did wonder what the whirring noise was when we turned on a switch). Random copper pipes bent over against the wall in several places and on several walls. Mouldy walls behind bottom cabinets. Sink drain diverted into another waste pipe propped into a 5 inch hole cut into it as someone had tipped cement down the one it was originally connected to outside. The adjoining conservatory/kitchen had been tiled fully over the manhole cover for the drains. All the joys of house ownership and after finding pictures of the previous house sale 15 years ago had been like this for some time.1
