HSBC Forcing online statements

Nice to hear that some companies are deliberately doing away with waste paper.I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!4

Well said. Paper (trees!), ink, associated production, transport and waste, impact on climate change all play a role. Doing away with paper wherever possible is the way to go. I think banks should charge for all paper statements.Thrugelmir said:
We all benefit. The waste of resources to produce and send you paper that you've really no need of.username said:
Ultimately the only people who do benefit from the savings of online bank statements are the shareholders of the bank.Matt8888 said:I don't follow your point, but the reason your email only says there is a document waiting is because email is more easily hacked than a secure online bank account. As for preferring paper statements, all banks will only be going one way with that one, so it's probably best just to get used to it. If you can post on here, I don't understand why you would have a problem with online statements. These are quicker, more reliable, cost less money (so save us all money, as banking customers) and are better for the environment.8 -

I agree with all of this but it would be lovely to think that at least some banks would be able to afford to donate at least some of the money raised from charging for paper statements to charities that support environmental causes!1 -
That might work if the charge covered the bank's costs, plus the donation to the charity.cricidmuslibale said:colsten said:

However, I don't think the way forward is through charities that support environmental causes. Caring for, protecting the environment for future generations shouldn't require the support of charities but should be built into the cost of doing business, into our tax system, and into everything each of us does.1 -
I would hope that most of us would be happy to support environmental causes either directly or indirectly whenever we can afford to do so whilst also fully accepting everything you've written in your 2nd paragraph!colsten said:

Keep paper statements. It gives our posties something to do.

I'll switch when they charge me for them, or pay me to stop having them.0 -
I stuck with paper statements for years, but then found I was't even opening them and my accountant now asks for pdf versions to be emailed to them. So I eventually switch to electronic ones - saves a few trees..

We had the chance to take a week (paid leave) to do charity work. many worked with environment based charities such as planting trees etc.
Many charities already receive great financial support from banks. Just search out HSBC community.Life in the slow lane1 -

The comment was made in response to a suggestion that banks could make a charge for providing paper statements not that they already do this.Thrugelmir said:
