Brokent TV from Argos

Hi, I purchased a £579 TV from Argos just over 2yrs ago and now it has a big black area over the screen so unusable.
It was bought on my Argos Card and have tried speaking to Argos customer services but just get passed round the different departments which is just so frustrating.
After speaking to a manager in the store (before lockdown) he told me that I had to get an independent report from an engineer (cost of £55.00 to be paid by me) and then they would look into it for a possible refund/replacement.
Is this normal practice by Argos and what are my options please.
The other annoying thing is that it doesn't show on my Argos purchases but I do have the receipt, when I asked Argos why it wasn't showing they just said the history got wiped after a certain time, convenient I thought!
Any help would be appreciated.

  • What Argos have asked for is perfectly acceptable and allowable under UK consumer law.
Basically, up to 6 months from purchase, any fault is deemed to be inherent (caused by something that was present at the time of purchase but not necessarily apparent at that time) and if the retailer disputes this, they have to prove otherwise.
After more than 6 months, the onus is on the purchaser to show an inherent fault.
Even though you have to pay for this report, if it shows an inherent defect, you can add the cost of it to your claim.

Then you go down the Consumer Rights route via either an independent report or via Argos report ,
You pay for them refundable if your claim accepted .
Vendor has right to Repair  Replace or Refund less 2 years usage and its their choice .
