It depends on the credit card provider systems - they might want the name on the account to match the card but most just want sort code and account number

  • In theory - yes it can be done. However I can't think of any reason why you would want to.
Normally the card holder would set up the d/d from their account, or pay online, or in cash perhaps at a branch of the bank.
Why do you have to become involved?
If the card holder is under financial pressure then you could be left paying their bill with no guarantee of getting the money back.

I would love to hear any conversation you might have if you try to claim back funds under the indemnity scheme.

Does it need to be a DD? My wife has a 0% card for the next 12 months with £1,000 on it. She pays £100 pm on DD from her account and I pay an additional £100 with a direct payment using her card reference. Maybe just do that?

It varies by lenders but in my experience most are happy to do so as long as they speak to the current account holder to confirm their permission.

Obviously for the cardholder it creates a risk that the third party cancels the DD or does a DD Guarantee claim and they won't know until they get the late/missing payment notice and fee.
