Returning faulty item That gets damaged upon return transit tured

I bought rolls of carpet and arranged  myself a Courier to deliver to me and  I organised a separate company to fit for me. Once they arrived the company fitting the carpet advised that in their opinion the carpet had lines in that they felt were a manufacturing fault. The seller asked for the rolls to be returned to them so they could see  and I again arranged a courier to send back. Once the carpet had arrived to seller they sent photos of the carpet having  been damaged (dirty, wet and possibly creased)  I have taken this up with the courier but wanted to know if anybody could clarify what the consumer right are on this? I would hope that the seller ( who haven’t emailed me yet apart from letting me know there was damage) would honour the fact that the carpet was being returned due to a fault and would exchange or refund me but I feel that they may now look for this cosmetic damage to the underside of the roll as a way to a avoid this. Any thoughts? Thanks

Did you take out insurance with the courier?

If the carpet arrived wet and dirty then the shop probably won't be refunding.

Why did you arrange your own delivery?

The supplier to the shop will credit the shop for a carpet with a manufacturing fault, they won’t credit them for a soggy / damaged carpet.
It’s your responsibility to get the carpet back to them in good condition, if your courier didn’t do this then it’s between you and the courier.

If you return a manky wet carpet to them, of course they’re not going to refund or replace.
