Is the information in this link any good? https://www.gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band
There's a lot of information in it as well as telling you how to challenge if you don't think yours is right.
I live in a council property in a village in the countryside and my band is the same as all my neighbours (there are only 14 of us) and that is A. Over the years four of my neighbours have bought their properties and their band has remained at A.Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. It was purchased off the council by the people who lived ther before them. They purchased it for £57000 in 19950 -

However prices certainly didn't increase between 1991 and 1995 so a selling price of £57,000 in 1995 would suggest that band C is correct. If your location suffered a decrease in house prices it may well be that it should be a band D instead.0 -

I think you are going to have an uphill struggle trying to persuade the VOA your home is in the wrong band. Especially if the other houses without vehicular access are the same or similar to yours and are Band C. Further because CT is almost 28 years old the VOA will just say the bands are well establishedIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Hi all, if anyone can give me some advise or point me in the right direction it will be appreciated.
I have been in touch with VOA on behalf of a friend who lives in East London. The majority of the properties in the road are all 2 or 3 bedroom terraced all built at the same time and style. No alterations have been made to the property, such as an extension / loft conversion which would have increased the property value and justified it being in a higher council tax band. My friend has lived in the house since 1980, and is 3 bedroom terraced.
The two bedroom terraced properties are in Band B and the three bedroom Band C, however my friend's is in Band D?
There are two other properties in the road in Band D, these are semi-detached, built in the 1990's with off street parking & garages.
I provided the VOA with details of five properties in the road - same age / style & design / size and type. One of which has a loft conversation and is still in a lower council tax band. The VOA have advised me I have not provided enough evidence & I need details of property sales two years either side of April 1991.
I have tried researching but I can only go as far back as 1995. Has anyone else experienced this & is there a way to provide the VOA with the information they require?

So maybe this is in Direct response to this forum and others like it, but I am finding it very hard to get the evidence needed to challenge council tax.
I have been to the Gov.uk Site, looked at the evidence they say they need and accept
5 Houses on lower band - ok that can be done through neighbours and websites
Sales between April 1989 - March 1993 (I'm England) - no historic site I can find seems to go back further than 1995
Then copied direct from Gov.uk "The VOA will not consider average house price information from websites such as Nationwide House Price Index, Nethouseprices, Rightmove or Zoopla as strong evidence".... can it be sheer coincidence that they are the exact same companies suggested to use on here??
