How is someone meant to know what name a third party used when setting up their account?
Ask them.  How else do you know their bank details?

You would think that would work, but the recipient couldn't remember what combination of details he had used 20+ years ago when he set up the account.  I suggested he check the details on his debit card (which were the same as on his cheque book), but they did not work (only used initial for first name):  we then tried the name on his bank statement - did not work (used initials for both middle names).

If someone asked me I would have to say that I don't know - there are several ways I have used to represent my name.  I suppose I should really contact the call centre to find out

Aha yes, this was commented when COP was first introduced.  I think some people found their names were shown in different styles on bank statements, cheque books and debit cards - confusion all round!

CoP is intended to give clues for close matches, as shown in J_B's 'Norris' example above, so if both banks have implemented the protocol in full then you shouldn't need to need to resort to repetitive guesswork.
I'm Santander and I can't remember who they were with.
    There were no suggestions.

Not sure why your experience differed from J_B's then, but Santander claim to offer correct info when partially matching, as per https://www.santander.co.uk/personal/support/fraud-and-security/making-a-new-payment

    2. The details partially match
If you’ve got a partial match, you’ll be given the actual name or account type of the account holder, so you can check and update the details, or contact the person or organisation you’re trying to pay.

However, I suppose the whole basis of this thread is the difference between theory and practice!

On several occasions, I have needed to set myself up as a payee with different banks. It does amaze me that I have so many different versions of my name with the same bank.

Debit card, online banking, personal correspondence, bank statements cheque book. I have only ever given each bank my name once but they keep finding new ways to display my name. And all this before adding in my wife’s name on our joint accounts.

A quick check on my credit reports also throw up variations on my name. I accept that having three forenames doesn’t help but once I entered my first name and surname and cop displayed all three forenames and asked if this was correct. I doubt that many third parties would recognise my middle names.

I was going to give it another try but Sods law strikes - Santander site is down

But with mine, I entered the *exact* details off the paying in slip, but then they told me it was only a 'partial match'
    Why?

Because the version of the account name deemed acceptable as a complete match isn't the one printed on the paying-in slip - why that would be, no idea!
