Can I assume they are lying about having sent this money? / Halifax

I'm owed a 5-figure sum for a work project.  The company paying me claim they sent the payment via BACs early Monday morning.  (It's not clear why they couldn't just do a same day Faster Payment or Chaps).  Anyway, they said the payment would hit my account (Halifax Current account) on 20th January, i.e. today.  From past experience, Halifax incoming BACs used to hit the account just after midnight.  No sign whatsoever of this payment.
I suppose it's possible that Halifax has changed the way they do things and incoming payments no longer arrive just after midnight?  
But I find it rather odd that this payment has not shown up yet......

It's not odd, and they're not lying either, it will be in the system and will be visible as and when - it's a large figure to you and understandably you're concerned but give it time !

I find that with HBOS credit card accounts they update at 9pm 
However I am also expecting a bacs payment into a HBOS credit card today which also hasnt arrived yet.

I'd only be concerned if it hadn't arrived by tomorrow. If it hasn't, politely ask your client for confirmation of the account number and sort code they sent the payment to to ensure they got it right, and if so, politely ask if they could ask their bank to run a trace on the payment as it hasn't arrived in your account yet.
