Letting Agent Fees - Can they be reimbursed?

Hi, I had a search of the forums and I can't find anything related to my question so I'm starting a new thread.
I was wondering if anyone had had any luck in getting reimbursements for letting agency fees? I paid £162 to a letting agent in 2016 as they said they needed it to do financial checks apparently. I've since heard that lettings agents aren't supposed to charge fees for that sort of thing?
Does anyone know more about that please?

They were allowed to in 2016.The new rules started in June 2020.

England, Wales or Scotland?
New rules came into force in England and Wales in 2019 massively restricting the fees letting agents could demand They now can't charge fees at the start of the tenancy (except for a refundable holding deposit). Before this they could require admin fees upfront.1 -
