recovering a lost .xls in win 7

Hmm this isn't looking good. For now, don't read anything from/write anything to that external hard disk drive. I'll try and work out what is the current* best way of recovering that file, although I don't have very high hopes.
*I haven't had to try and do this in years

I think Recuva might be the best practical option.

Running chkdisk can recover the disk, but it is unlikely to recover that file.
