Had a leak in the bathroom and water went down through to the ceiling of the room below. Insurance company hired professionals who came round with dryers and equipment; all resolved now but repainting is upto me. There are the typical brown/yellowish stains on the ceiling, about the size of two large hands Not much, but one of the professionals suggested I "seal and prime the area". What is he talking about and is there a product that will do the job - I guess it will be a tin of something from screwfix ?.

I've used Zinsser Cover Stain for a stained ceiling below a bathroom and it worked. Amazon sell it.
If you just try painting over the stain with emulsion, the stain comes straight back, no matter how many coats you apply. Been there, got the T-Shirt!

Make sure you allow at least two coats of the stain blocker before painting over, and allow to dry thoroughly - otherwise it will just seep through again.

If you are short of time. Zinsser do an aerosol block for ceilings with a nozzle that points upwards. Two coats of that, and you may not even need to emulsion the ceiling afterwards.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I've used standard oil based paint as a blocker for water stains.  It worked fine, so worth considering if you have some knocking around.
  • Hope it's alright to jump in and ask a related question. If you have stains on your ceiling and you're going to use one of the stain blocker primers - should you be applying it to the whole ceiling, or is it enough to make sure it covers the stains? The ceiling is off-white, the primer is white, then I'd be repainting the same off white - so am wondering if it's enough to just paint the primer on the stain area?

There’s no need to put block on the whole ceiling.

  • Worth, I think, going a good couple of inches beyond any visible signs of the stain tobesurtobesure, but as GDB says no need to do it all.
