to be precise - left the custom union. which is a different thing and what makes it now complicated and more expensive.

It's always included the postage when previously going over the £15 limit.

Also how is it a scam when you are aware of it and have a choice?

untrue (although a common misunderstanding)
Vat is charged on a service - unfortunately in the context of "postage" you are being charged for the service of dealing with the postage, so the cost of the postage is indeed subject to VAT
