    £900 after the excess
They could have given you a Gift Card for £900 so you have in fact gained.
I think the OP would have preferred a gift card for £900 to having paid them £200 and got a gift card for £1100 - less flexibility.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Well the OP would have had to pay their excess anyway if it's part of their insurance contract so it's better to get a £1100 gift card rather than £900.
