You may find your neighbours didn’t get much notice by the builders either. Unless it’s your actual neighbour carrying out the works? We had a weeks notice, so I did notify both neighbours either side as well as the property opposite as we were expecting a skip. They were happy to be told and actually came over a few times to look at the work as it progressed, single storey rear extension. I even delivered flowers once it was over. Some neighbours just don’t think it’s any of your business what they do.

If the work involves a party wall, read:
Otherwise there are no rules at all, and only politeness.

I thought that a date would be arranged with builders? I had no idea they choose the date and then inform you. In that case, I understand.
So just to further expand, we had several quotes and agreed a deal with our preferred builder, however they couldn’t start for 6 months due to current workload, at month 4 they rang to say coming in a week to make a start of footings, we were thrilled it was earlier but like I mentioned only had a weeks notice.

In some cases, the first time you know for sure when the builders are going to arrive is when you look out the window and see a Transit parking up...

Even then, there's a fair chance that they'll disappear again within the hour.

Simply, they don't always know when they'll finish the previous job. Perhaps it's weather-dependent. Perhaps there's a delay in materials. Perhaps a subcontractor didn't show. Perhaps a job they were dependent upon simply over-ran.

I've had a phone call before now from a plasterer who I'd been trying for ages to pin down... He called at 7.45am - he'd arrived at the site of the new-build he was meant to be on, and the windows weren't in. So he was wasting his time there. 20 minutes later, he's unloading his gear at mine while I frantically run around getting things out of his way from the room he was skimming...

If only.... Basically you go into a queue and wait for them to call you.

Our builders started ours whilst still finishing off their previous job so it was a bit stop start for a while whilst they were transitioning over.

They phoned up about a week before they started asking if it was OK to start

We had a week's notice of the start date for our garden hard landscaping.  We knew it would involve a lot of stone cutting, which would be noisy and dusty, so apologised in advance to our immediate neighbours (both sides and back) and advised them to keep their windows closed against the dust. No whinges.
Of course, we invited them to our garden warming party once it was all over!

your question was notice given by a neighbour and the answer to that is NONE - there is no legal requirement to notify start of works to neighbours

In addition, unless the nature of the works required the council to write to neighbours as part of the planning permission process, you may have zero warning of anything at all.

For example i woke up one day to find the person behind was having a loft conversion done and the noise was the workmen dropping the roof tiles on the ground as they started stripping the old roof. He had not even mentioned he was thinking of it, let alone notified a start.
