IPad air 1

Hi guys, got a problem with my I pad air 1.
Been working great for 5 years.
Tried to switch on this morning and not!
Plenty of battery when I used it yesterday, but none today.
Tried to charge it but not charging at all.
Showing battery empty.
Do. Batteries just go ?
Usually just have to charge more often as a sign it is depleting.
Always held it,s charge all day + 
Is it worth changing battery or get a new 8 th edition?
New air is too dear for my requirements.
Has anyone changed the battery, looks at YouTube !
Any advice would be grateful

Update.
Seems battery is fine,100% full.
After not charging or starting after umpteen attemts, it just decided to work?
Apple icon came on screen, without pushing start button, and everything ok !

No idea but also have an Air 1 (bought 2014) and the battery life is not predictable. Can fail at any point from 40% down, then takes a while to charge, has been like this for a year or so. Also have an iPad 2 from 2012 that still shows stable battery life - obviously this is just anecdotal but maybe the air batteries weren't as good, or the increased demand from the air wasn't reflected in a suitably improved battery.

Sounds like your ipad was doing an update and you tried it at the 'wrong' moment.
