Weather affects delivery, now being charged £300 for re delivery!

We have rented a storage container to store our furniture in, it was due to be delivered to our new renovation property yesterday (Friday).
On Thursday evening, the company called to clarify where on the property the unit was to be placed, this was unexpected as we had spent time on the phone with the company discussing this whilst they looked at the land on google earth. They said that to put it at the back of the driveway (which is where we had agreed on the telephone, yet they said we didn’t) we had to pay an addition £200 as a bigger crane was required. Feeling like we had no other option we reluctantly verbally agreed to spread this payment over our direct debit.
On Friday morning we woke up to over 7 inches of snow! We set to clearing the driveway and tried to make a start on clearing the main public road. The delivery driver arrived and said that he did not think it was a good idea to attempt delivery, and if he got stuck in the snow we would be liable for his recovery fee, he contacted his boss who said to redeliver today (Saturday).
At 7pm last night the storage company called and said that we had refused delivery so would need to pay a further £300 for delivery today, a higher rate because it is the weekend. We refuted this and he said that as he was not there to witness the conversation he wouldn’t uphold that point, however the contact states that we are responsible for access which we did not ensure so we would still be liable for additional delivery fees.
We have asked to terminate the contract and a refund of our deposit and he said that he would look into a refund but would be deducting delivery costs.
Do we have any rights in this situation? It seems really unfair that we are out of pocket due to something that is completely out of our control! We are now left with no where to store our belongings, no money to fund storage with another company and we need to be out of our house on Monday morning!

It's unfortunate rather than unfair. Snow preventing delivery is no more the company's fault than it is yours.
Given your urgent need for storage, negotiation would seem to be the best approach, even if you end up paying more than you originally wanted to. You have a right to cancel, but they have a right to pass on their genuine costs and you still need a container.2 -
That does seem unfair. The driver chose not to deliver you didn’t refuse it.1

Sounds a little odd to me. You didn't refuse delivery. They refused.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

Our point exactly, we called hours before to advise that the road was bad and then the driver rung his boss who said don’t attempt. However the storage company are saying that those conversations didn’t take place and even asked us to prove that they did!0 -

Yes, but it applies to both parties. So you can't claim against them for late delivery if it was caused by the weather, but neither can they surcharge you for delivery because the weather meant it had to be rescheduled.mawk86 said:
