Hi
Can anyone point me in the direction of a good list on tasks that i need to undertake before, or after i've moved house? We're now about two weeks away from moving we think, and i've lived in this house since birth so have no idea where to start with tasks like redirecting my mail, updating my address with the banks, employer, driving license, setting up the utilities, council tax, etc!
Wonder if anyone had a good webpage that covers this sort of thing, so far all the info i've found has been on various sites and not necessarily up to date. I don't want to miss anything critical!

Banks - you can usually do this with your online banking. You may be required to do it in branch with proof of address (obviously once you get some proof of address). Check with your bank. Change your pension scheme address as well if you're on one.
Change your address with your employer via your HR system
Utilities and council tax are done the day you move in, no earlier. For many utilities they'll have an online form for moving house.
Contact council on the day you move in to set up your council tax account. Your first payment won't be for a few weeks and will be higher than usual since there's a delayed first payment
Take the gas and electricity meter readings the day you move in and set up your account with the seller's provider. Once you are set up you can look at switching.
Take the water meter reading the day you move in and set up your account with the relevant water company.
Contact a TV & Broadband supplier the day you move in. Earlier than this and you risk cutting off the seller. Could take a month to get installed so you'll have to use mobile data and the aerial.
Pay for redirection with Royal Mail. Bear in mind it's not 100% effective (I've forwarded plenty of my sellers post because a few bits were missed even through redirection is in place until the end of spring). If your current residence your parent's place it'll be easy to pick it up. If it's being sold maybe leave a note kindly asking the buyers to put any of your post back in a post box.
You need to change your address with HMRC as well.
I've still got my foreign driving license so you'll have to check with the DVLA for that.
Set up a check list to make sure you've ticked off everything.1 -
Just went through my checklist (I moved recently).
Register to vote at your new address (you don't change your address on your existing registration, you re-register).
Update your address with opticians, subscriptions (magazines, professional institutions) etc.
Register with a local GP.
Mobile phone (I'm on a contract so had to to this after my address was updated with my bank).1 -
Thanks guys, that's really helpful!0

Ive recently moved- .No ones list will be the same but we both a list a couple of weeks before we moved and quite often had to add to it.
As well as the utilities and work there may be some of these you need to change-
Doctors, when you update at the doctors it automatically updates your hospital records as well.
Car registration document (can be done online) and insurance.
Banks- ours were Halifax and Natwest and we had to go in person.
Credit cards- these are done online.
Vets and pet insurance.
Pension and insurance companies.
Ebay/Paypal
Premium bonds (again done online)
Club/gym memberships or magazine subscriptions
Dont forget any online retailers you use as well.

Also if you have pets and they're chipped, don't forget to update the address on the service they're registered with0

I found it easier to write a list of every single thing, then tick it off as it's done.
When I was moving from rental to my home I found my list while packing and then crossed everything off as I updated everything.
Banks and pensions write to old address and new address, to confirm the change.
If you still have access to the old address eg it's the family home and parents are still living in it and you will pop in occasionally, don't bother with mail redirect.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0
