Santander mobile banking App

Santander appear to have made a unilateral decision (ie did not consult customers) to update their mobile banking app but which does not run on older iPhones. This means that I  can no longer use my I iPhone 5 for banking and as yet, Santander have not offered me a new phone.   Am I alone with my complaint?

You are not alone, it often comes up on these pages. I seem to recall that the usual repost is that you shouldn't be using an out-of-date device with out-of-date software for banking.

You’re not alone but you’re in a very small minority. You have to accept that older software versions on mobiles or PCs tend to be less secure so banking providers will rightly (IMHO) not allow their apps to run on older devices. You basically have 2 choices:
    1) buy a different mobile which you can run the Santander app on
    2) Stick with your existing handset and use an alternative method of banking eg pc banking, in branch banking etc.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any decisions taken by financial institutions (or most businesses to be fair) that aren't unilateral - if Santander were to ask customers if they wanted to be able to continue using old phones then it would be quite a surprise if anyone responded to say no, so it would be a complete waste of time asking the question!  Would you expect to be asked if you'd like more interest, or lower charges?

Having said that, it would be better to give some advance notice of such changes, but expecting the right to be consulted is ambitious....

It is common for older versions of OS and browsers to be deprecated.  You can't expect dev teams to build and maintain software for every single possible OS version or browser version given the amount of time that it takes (especially when that software is free).  Your solution is to update your phone.

Your expectation is totally unrealistic (especially expecting them to buy you a new phone).

Yes you are not alone in your complaint as others have pointed out there’s nearly a thread every month about banks updating apps that don’t support older phones. The 5c was released in 2013 so now nearly 8 years old and very out of date and the OS is very old and less secure than the current version.

What’s ridiculous is that you expect Santander to provide you with a new phone!!
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

Use online banking? Though it doesn't work on a DOS computer.

I'd contact Apple with your complaint not Santander. It's their decision to not supply updates to the existing phone users, it's not Santander's fault that your phone doesn't meet the security requirements for their app. I suspect Apple won't be offering you a new phone though.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Why should Apple spend time and money supporting significantly old devices with software updates?  It’s a bit like expecting parts for a Ford Cortina still to be widely available.

Don't think Apple or their users would appreciate a comparison with a Ford Cortina!
