    I did ask exactly that of a national bank operator when I finally got through, their response was that the info was on their screen but it was procedure to ensure that I hadn’t put the phone down while on hold and someone else had picked it up.

    The cynic in me says thats deliberate.  HSBC has had the same grainy poor recording for years.  Only one step up from a theremin.
