Printer setup problem

I am working away from home and trying to get a laptop to print to a USB attached printer shared from a desktop.
The setup looks OK and I can print a test page, but printing from Word gives the error message "Cannot print due to a problem with the printer setup".
The troubleshooting tool can find no issues.
Both machines are running Win10.
How do I determine what the setup issue is?
