New Laptop Advice Please

Options
Looking to purchase a new laptop. Our current laptop is an HP Pavillion g6 with an i3-3110M CPU 8GB Ram.
Looking at going for a faster processor, still 8GB of Ram. Have always had HP in the past but open to suggestions. Seems stock is pretty low or non existent in most places. I've found these two and wondered if they would be suitable (required for browsing, emails, storing photos etc - not gaming)
Unfortunately having just joined I'm unable to post links but looking at the dell inspiron - 15-3000 laptop for £499 on currys or hp laptop 15s-eq0032na on AO.com for £499 also. Budget up to £550-600
Any help gratefully received I am somewhat a computer novice

When you say "slow" what do you actually mean, slow to start up for example? This can be easily solved by upgrading to an SSD, along with a clean install of W10. Your memory's OK and whilst not the speediest of processors the i3 is more than capable of doing most home stuff.

If you're determined you want new though then I'd take the Dell of the HP any day, assuming it has similar specs.

You could probably (?) get a new SSD and new battery for under £100 and this is MSE, but if you prefer ................. ;)

Five to ten minutes to swap the slow HDD for a much faster SSD.
Twenty minutes to clean install Windows 10.
593553-001/MU06 battery from £15 to £30 via eBay. Not so sure about 'genuine' batteries for £25 to £30, as they can easily be eight years old.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Crucial-MX500-500GB-SSD-Hard-Drive-CT500MX500SSD1-NEW-Sealed/383898846775 is a top quality SSD.
Prices begin from around £20. All much quicker and more efficient than your current HDD.
You can buy a wireless ac USB adaptor for around £5 or change your wireless card(though I might need to supply you a BIOS update if you want to change/upgrade the internal WiFi card.

Easiest is just to plug in a USB wireless adapter.
So theoretically, you can refurb your laptop for £40.

  • +1 that SSD upgrade will transform the existing laptop and battery replacement to make it portable again!
