The database will be wrong if a meter change hasn't been correctly reported. It is one reason why independent meter reading are done periodically. I have found meters that have been changed 5 years ago and not reported.

If there is any doubt I concur that switching the supply off (the lever on the inlet (left hand) pipe) and see if you can light the hob/fire up the boiler. You'll save yourself years of pain, with wrong bills, if it isn't your meter.

Easy and safe to do, always worth knowing where to turn gas, water and electricity off in case of emergency.

Indeed. Yet you'd be amazed the number of people who box gas meters in so only the index is showing and the shut-off is inaccessible.

If you don't want to turn it off

Turn all gas appliances on full whack (lit of course)
Run down to the meters and see which is spinning the fastest

Nip back up and turn all off, and check meter has stopped

Do the pies from the meter run up the outside wall? Can you trace them to your flat?
Sometimes that's how I check
