  • On another note, how bad is normal vinyl? Obviously cost wise, it’s much cheaper.

If you mean lino off a roll, the better quality stuff can last quite well - My kitchen had a lino floor down for the best part of 20 years. Towards the end, it started to get brittle and had a few <ahem> cracks where I had dropped something very large & heavy. That aside, it stood up surprisingly well to the daily abuse it got.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

I've just gotten herringbone laminate and it was costlier, more time consuming and 100% worth it compared to alternatives. I love the floor.
  • Hi free bear, yes that’s what I mean, just as it’s quite a large room so to tile or lvt is working out pretty expensive.

We put some sheet vinyl down in our breakfast room in our house which we rented out for a year before moving in ourselves. Unfortunately we didn't spot it before releasing the deposit but the tenant must have had something like a chair or table with metal legs and an unprotected leg cut a ring shaped mark in the vinyl.  I've also managed to cut it in another place with the corner of a vacuum cleaner. We have had vinyl in previous homes and never had an issue. Also had Karndean in our previous home which looked like new 14 years after it was laid.

  • Another very attractive finish.

But I have an aversion to ceramic floor tiles too, for the same reasons as Doozer - their coldness, hardness, clackiness.

There are surely better options out there that'll give you the same appearance? Allura by Forbo is amazing quality - far better than, say, Karndean from my experience - and is proper commercial grade; I don't think you'll have any issues with longevity. Whether they have a finish that'll match your current choices, I'm afraid I don't know.
I'm gonna do the British thing and ask: £ / sq m?

  • I feel a bit stuck! I know I will need to make some decisions in the next few weeks but I don't know here to start given everything is lockdown and no showrooms are open?  Do the LVTs really look like wood, tile etc? I'm happy with my flooring atm but plan to have underfloor heating throughout and replaced during the course of the Big Build 2021 because I am sick of being so cold. Current floor in my dining room library is this and I am happy with the look:

Have you thought about getting some samples sent to you? Amtico and Karndean both do them

    https://www.karndean.com/en-gb/floors

Karndean also have an augmented reality iPhone app which might help you visualise the options better.

It's going to depend on the individual product, but yes, they definitely can look like real wood.

We've not had many people in the house 🙄 but three people have spoken assuming that ours is a real wood parquet.  I wouldn't have bought it if it looked fake.  I have expensive taste, I just have to look harder for the relative bargains.    Ours is from the Amtico Spacia range.
