Boiler guarantee validity...?

I had a Baxi Duo-tec Combi HE A Range boiler fitted in March 2016.  I've had it serviced every year, however it has now developed a fault where the heating works without problem but the water goes hot, cold, hot, cold in very quick changes.  The boiler, because I got it under a npower scheme for people on limited incomes (I did pay a contribution to the cost), only came with a 2 year guarantee whereas if I had have paid full price privately, it would have come with a 7 year guarantee.  My plumber thinks this is a bit of a cheek, especially as the repair could well be expensive...
What do my fellow MSE forum participants think please?  I'm not really sure what I should do, and I'm not even with npower now.  Thank you!

If the scheme only offered a 2 year guarantee then that is what you accepted when you used it Im afraid.
You may have consumer rights under the CRA if you can prove that the boiler was faulty when you bought it, aka had some inherent fault which meant it was bound to fail from the start. If it is found to be inherently faulty, do be aware they can repair, refund or replace, and after 5 years the company could opt for a partial refund taking into account your 5 years of use, and if you didnt pay much to begin with this amount could end up being negligible.

They are entitled to have whatever terms as they choose as far as their warranty is concerned. Time to get a gas engineer out to fix it.
  • Thank you Katrina.  That's helpful of you - thank you for taking the time to reply  :)
  • Thank you neilmcl - I've just booked him for next week.  I thought that the guarantee period was set but I thought I'd check with you all.  This site is so helpful!
