Like Digger I had a yellow handled thingy from a shed and then I also got a Fiskars maul which in comparison was a real pleasure to use. The model I got was probably a bit heavier than I need but I'm a solid lass and it saves money on the gym! I wear cheap rigger boots when I split wood and make sure your set up and stance are safe.As I scrounge wood of all types I often get stubborn lumps and for these a grenade (or far better, two..) is very useful and I use it with a lump hammer. Very satisfying when you finally get it split, but such bits tend to need longer seasoning.2

madlyn, for £25 you should go for it. You will be able to find out if a maul is for you.
silverwhistle, a "solid lass" with a Fiskar Maul.........what you doing after lockdown ends? 😋

I am not getting any younger, and my back and knees remind me constantly! However, given that many of us live a sedentary lifestyle, that 30 minute ‘Maul Workout’ is a good thing IMO. To be fair, 30 minutes is my limit, and I am a strong man. I tend to bring in logs, stack ‘em, season ‘em and split ‘em when needed.0

Just recently bought a maul after a few decades using an axe or chisels (old axe heads) and lump hammer. Quite like it but not done enough nor different logs to know what I prefer. Getting on a bit and not as fit as I was so may get an electric splitter in the near future eventually. Female and do like working with wood as I've done so much of it throughout my life - you get more than one heat off burning wood if you saw it and chop it yourself.1

I recently blunt my chainsaw but that was because there was a length of wire right through the middle of the log I was cutting.1
