I've been using Outlook365 on a windows 10 machine and have successfull been using POP settings for an @outlook.com email for some time - yesterday this stopped working (my partner has an account on the PC as well and her outlook.com has also stopped working.

The POP settings being used are:
 Incoming mail server = pop-mail.outlook.com
 Outgoing mail server = smtp-mail.outlook.com
 username =  xxxx.outlook.com

More Settings (Outgoing Server):
"My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authorisation" ticked (and "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" selected)
More Settings (Advanced):
 Incoming server (POP3) = 995
 “This server requires SSL/TLS” enabled

  Outgoing server (SMTP) = 25

  Encryption connection = STARTTLS

The above has been working fine until yesterday.

Have also tried these settings (from https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/options/mail/accounts/popImap)

The POP settings being used are (accessed thorugh
 Incoming mail server = outlook.office365.com
 Outgoing mail server = smtp.office365.com

 username =  xxxx.outlook.com
More Settings (Outgoing Server):
"My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authorisation" ticked (and "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" selected)
More Settings (Advanced):
 Incoming server (POP3) = 995

 “This server requires SSL/TLS” enabled

 Outgoing server (SMTP) = 587

 Encryption connection = STARTTLS

Anybod got any idea why it’s suddenly stopped working?

Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.

  • If you have a @outlook.com email, then you should not be using POP to collect and send mail in Outlook 365. Remove the account and add as a new account, with your @outlook.com address. Outlook 365 will then configure this for you.

Why can't I use POP when it can be configured to work and has been working?  I have other email accounts and want them all to go to the same inbox.  I don't believe you can do this with the outlook app if you used IMAP.

if these accounts have two factor authentication on them you need to set up an app password for them.

Thanks but all passwords have been set up and the emails have been received fine up 'til yesterday.
Sorry, I should have mentioned the error I'm getting.  when outlook does a send/receive, it comes up with the "Enter your username and password..." dialog (which it wasn't before) and then shows the error 0x800CC92 "unknown user name or bad password" when attempting to receive emails but it does send test emails.

Actually I've just tried to send an email from my outlook.com email address from Outlook365 but I had a bounceback messave (which I can see on the web version of outlook) which says:

SN1NAM01FT008.mail.protection.outlook.com rejected your message to the following email addresses:
    xxxxx@outlook.com
A communication failure occurred during the delivery of this message. Please try to resend the message later. If the problem continues, contact your email admin.
    SN1NAM01FT008.mail.protection.outlook.com gave this error:
Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable (S2017062302).

Can you clarify what Outlook 365 is please
Its just that neither I or as far as I can see  Google have any idea what it is

Reason for never using POP is that if someone configures desktop Outlook to use POP then by default it deletes on server after 14 days if they forget to check
POP/SMTP  also stores sent items locally only which is not good if your hardware goes bang
If you have an office 365 mailbox  and Desktop outlook this is the best you can get

By Outlook 365 I mean the Outlook app in Office 365.
There's a settings option for POP not to delete emails on the server. And it is a pain that it only stores sent items locally but I'd rather have that to have a common inbox.
Unfortunately, I'm still no further closer in understanding why it should all of a sudden stop working.
