Hotmail password problems

I am having problems getting Thunderbird to accept my new Hotmail password
It previously accepted the old one
I can log in to my hotmail account via Webmail (outlook, com) and have got my 2 android devices to accept the new password
But Thunderbird won't accept it - telling me "Sending of password for user ********* did not succeed. Mail server pop3.live.com responded: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" - (Yes I use pop3 !)
I have cut and pasted the new password from a txt file and the case is correct as well.
Why is this and what's the solution ?

This is almost always caused by two step authentication. You can generate app passwords to use instead:

Check the account server settings as to whether the password should be sent as normal or encrypted and the connection security settings are correct (TLS/SSL etc)
also
Try removing the original password
tools -options - security -passwords - saved passwords - show passwords look for your hotmail entries and remove
close thunderbird and restart - you should be prompted to enter password as a clean entry.

Do you have two step authentication/verification or not?If you do, you need to set up an app password, please see the link I've posted, and use that on all your devices.0

The problem appears to be that the Hotmail password and MS password are no longer one and the same !
