I'm wanting to use Bi-carbonated soda (or sodium Bicarbonate) for household cleaning and deodorising. Has anyone seen it in a large pack or box in any of the cheaper shops (Homebargains or similar) I've only seen it in small tubs in the baking area, but I'm sure it is sold in larger containers as a cleaner?  I'd really appreciate it as in the current situation I don't want to be trailing round lots of shops and asking the already busy assistants. Thank you x

Soda crystals I've seen in many stores near the washing powder. Last time I bought it, it was 90p and about the same size as a bag of sugar, I think that was Asda. I saw it in the pound shop but next time I went to buy it they didn't have it in stock.
  • I got mine from Amazon – 5 kg of food grade bicarbonate in a nice resealable bucket but I have noticed that the price has gone up by over a third since I bought it nine months ago.
  • I also buy mine from Amazon although, yes, the price has risen.  Until not that long ago, Aldi was selling soda crystals for £1 but I guess it’s all about supply now.  It’s a bit like white vinegar.....the price has started to climb in some places.

Wilko do 500g for £1.75 if you haven't got space to store 5kg but just looking online is currently out of stock (I use it for work boots/trainers).
I'm writing a book on plagiarism. It wasn't my idea.

I buy mine from the Chinese wholesalers, Wing Yip.  If you live near one of their branches, you can buy a 5kg tub for £7.60.  They do have a click and collect service, which works with UPS "shops", but I've never used it.

Washing soda (aka soda crystals) and Bicarbonate of Soda (aka baking soda) are not the same thing, so DO NOT confuse the two.  Washing soda's formula is Na2CO3, while bicarb's is NaHCO3. Washing soda is much more caustic than bicarb.  (In chemical effect, do you remember playing with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) in Chemistry at school?   Washing soda is close to that.)

Thanks for the comments, although Soda crystals are probably good for cleaning, as Pipney says, it is different, it is specifically bicarb I'm hoping to buy, and hopefully from a high street store rather than online. Sounds like other people have had the same idea if prices are rising (Pardon the slight pun there!)
Appreciate the advice . I'll have a look in Aldi and Wilkos :)
