The whole point of a deposit is so that the seller has some protection against a buyer changing their mind.

If I was the seller I wouldn’t give you a penny back, sorry but you’ve messed them about so I’m with the seller on this one

So you’re telling me that you’d happily take £50 off someone just for the sake of it? Because you could? He’s lost nothing as a result of me changing my mind. We obviously had very different upbringings, seems you lack basic common decency!
It’s a faff though, nothing more annoying than people dropping out.
I’d probably split it 50/50, I don’t work for free.

Without having something written down and agreed in terms of if you changed your mind - there's likely not a lot that can be done in terms of 'consumer rights'. You might say that the decent thing to do would be to return it if they've since resold it - but there's a chance they sold it £50 cheaper to shift it quickly as they'd already taken your deposit into account in their sales figure. I would also say you'd have to chalk this down to experience - and next time you want to buy something - if you're going to leave a deposit - agree in writing that it's refundable if you change your mind (but then it would seem daft leaving a deposit if you could do that - as the seller might still be mucked around by the buyer!)

Why did you give a deposit if, as it seems, you weren't sure?  If I were the seller I'd probably have given you back at least some of the deposit, because I'm a mug, and it would be "nice" if the seller did so.  However, the seller may have had to accept a lower offer.  By giving a deposit you agreed to buy it so you broke the "contract".

Yea, I could happily do that if someone messed me about.

im also not daft enough to put a deposit down on something unless I intended to complete

You bought a sofa you no longer want. Your question is "where do I stand"? The answer is obvious. You stand in the space the sofa was going to fit in.

Yes you did have different upbringings....they were brought up to honour a deal and stand by their word, you were brought up to blame everyone else for your problems and mess people about.
