New Smart Meter: Crazy Gas Readings

We had a new smart meter installed at the property on Friday lunchtime and since then our electric readings have been normal but our gas readings make no sense. It's a 4 bed detached house with only 3 of us living here, working from home granted, and the total gas reading for a roughly 72 hour period is £10.50 for 00023.080m3 of gas that the meter has recorded in use. The small hand held readout gives us our gas usage in kwh and the total reading since the meter was installed is 255 kwh. However, we're on a dual fuel tariff of 18.22p per kwh and a daily standing charge of 22p. So, if I multiply 18.22p by our 'per kwh' tariff of 18.22p that gives me a total cost of £4.64 which is roughly 50% of the £10.50 on our current readings. So it looks like maybe our gas reading has mistakenly doubled? Has anyone had a similar experience? I called them but they said they can't get readings remotely yet as the meter can take up to 28 days to start sending them data.

You're using an electricity price to work out the cost of gas???

You can’t possibly be paying 18p for a kWh of gas. Read the actual meter and post some readings here please.  No idea why your multiplying 18.2 by itself.
  • Hi,
your gas unit rate should only be about 2/3p.
  • 1. Is the IHD showing the correct gas tariff? This is usually available to see in one of the IHD sub menus.
    2. What is the IHD showing as your daily gas cost for today? So far today, we have consumed 55.54kWhs and the cost so far is £1.71 including the daily standing charge.
    3.  Dual fuel tariffs have different unit prices and (usually) different standing charges for gas and electricity. The only thing that is dual is the fact that you are using a single supplier for both utilities.

Here is what the IHD is showing currently. This is basically the total since the smart meter was installed at lunchtime on Friday

    23m3 is roughly 257kwh.
Gas is usually charged between 2-3p per kwh.
So taking an average unit rate of 2.5p its 257x0.025 = £6.42 (+whatever your standing charge is for  4 days, approx 80p)
I suggest you go through the menus of your IHD and see what the tariff they are quoting you are on and compare that to your bill. To be honest its only the readings that matter, when the readings get sent to your utility company they "should" charge you on the tariff you are actually on on your bill. (which is what counts)

(the 18p you are quoting in your original post is likely your electricity unit cost and not your GAS cost. (If it is, you need to get onto a better tariff!!! you should be paying nearer the 13p mark currently)

    EDIT:
Having seen your other thread again, your unit rate is 1.96p for gas. so you've used £5.04 of gas, plus 80p standing charge since friday. Which i don't think it unreasonable considering the cold weather.
The IHDs are often inaccurate as they are programmed on the wrong tariff when you've just had your meter changed. Either contact the supplier to update it or wait and it should update on its own. You ACTUAL bill shouldn't be affected.

OP perhaps consider going back to your other thread on this as people are replying there as well?

Dan  -just put the IHD in a kitchen drawer and forget it.
Take your readings from the meters themselves and set up  a simple spreadsheet  to get the running costs.

Go into the IHD sub menus and you will see the gas tariff that has been set by your supplier. It is possible that this information has yet to be transmitted to your meter. If there is a tariff then check that it is correct. Remember, your smart meter and IHD have nothing whatsoever to do with your billing. You are billed by your supplier on your meter readings using the tariff that you have signed up to when you switched.

Out of interest, what is your gas tariff? 263 x 3p comes £7.29 plus 4 days standing charge. You may just be on an expensive tariff.
