American shares

Simple question that only requires a simple answer.
Long before I bought UK shares, I'd look at them and think "Is that £244 per share for Tesco?" eventually finding out it's £2.44 per share. The question is, are American shares different? So Telsa for example. Is it $845 a share or $8.45? I'm feeling that's a stupid question but just asking for a simple answer. Not a "You shouldn't be investing if you don't understand blah, blah".

One Tesla share would cost you $880.00 at yesterdays closing price.
And one Berkshire Hathaway A share costs about $340,000.00.

Tesla is $845, or $850 at the time of posting - wherever you're sourcing prices from should show units, and in the case of UK stocks they're often listed in GBX (if expressed in pence) rather than GBP (pounds) so somewhere listing Tesco as 244 should clarify that the unit is GBX not GBP.
  • If you are looking at IG Index, they show US shares in US Cents and UK shares in GBP pence.

If you're keen to have a little flutter you can buy fractional shares at some of the new(ish) low-cost entrants to the broker/platform market such as Freetrade and Trading 212....
