It could be for the immersion heater which will heat the water in your hot water cylinder using electricity.

It may or may not even be connected. For example, if in the past you have changed to a combi-boiler, it would be superfluous.

Obviously you can test it by:

    1. turn of your water heating method (gas?)
    2. wait for your hot water tap to run cool-ish
    3. turn it on and see if the hot water heats up.

Although it says water heater on it they are not usually down near the floor as in your photo. I would say its an old storage radiator outlet. What happens when you switch it on?

Whatever it is, it would be illegal under current regs. to have that in your bathroom, as well as being highly dangerous....
  • Does the red light come on when you switch it?
  • Yes just to confirm the red light does come on when switched on, so confused its just sat alone in the bathroom floor this random switch....

So, *if possible* can you check to see if your electricity meter goes faster when it's on compared with off?
That would tell you whether it was actually using any current.
