Share Certificate

Good morning - I am looking for some advice. When my son was born, my dad gave him his BT 5p Shares certificate which I put away in my son's paperwork, and to be honest, that's where it's stayed (forgotten!). My son turns 18 in a few weeks time, and I was going through his paperwork file and came across the share certificate. However, it is still in my dad's name and he has now passed away (10 years ago). Are the shares now void, or can I transfer them into my sons name and ultimately sell for him (or he himself can sell when he turns 18).
I have never had any shares before, and I haven't got a clue what to do, who to contact or anything - I'm completely in the dark, so any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
With best wishes
